11AM - 1PM:
Special Event: “History of Greek Jews from Antiquity until the Present”, presented by Elliot Colchamiro – hosted by Roger and Amy Rolfe Gunnison Library, 1 Quartz St, Gunnison, FREE. Light snacks will be provided.

We have a unique opportunity to listen, learn and be entertained by a renowned expert on Jews in Greece. We hope that you come, bring your friends, Jews and non-Jews alike. Seating is limited so get there early!

Born and raised in Brooklyn, Elliot Colchamiro took on a new profession after retirement, that of a “professional volunteer”. Starting as a volunteer archivist in the New York City office of the "National Archives and Records Administration", he also served as a tour guide at the nearby "Museum of Jewish Heritage." Currently he conducts tours at the "Holocaust Documentation & Education Center" in Dania Beach Florida where he has transcribed to text more than two dozen Holocaust testimonies. Elliot will discuss the history of the Greek Jews from antiquity until the present time, including the murder of 87% of the Jews of Greece during the holocaust. His presentation includes pictures, videos and music. It is based on his research as well as his personal knowledge of the subject. His parents were born in the city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece.  Elliot's paternal grandfather was a founder of the only “Romaniote” Greek synagogue in the western hemisphere.  The synagogue, established on Manhattan’s lower east side nearly a century ago continues to function.
